Here is the small hunting lodge of Louis XIII, built on the hill of Versailles, so wonderfully drawn by Jean-Claude Le Guillou in Versailles, edited by Deux Coqs d’Or. It was a simple building with two short wings on each side. It had only five small rooms furbished with some tapestries, a billiards, and a few chests. Nothing could let then predict that of this small building would one day come out Versailles.

Versailles in 1668 already offers a much more grandiose aspect, after the first works undertaken by Louis XIV. The small lodge of Louis XIII is still the starting point of the new constructions, among which two additional wings that create a new much broader courtyard. In the background the gardens have already their proportions and their final shape.
