Legendary goddess with multiple functions, it was in her honour that this sanctuary
was erected on the Acropolis. The altar of Artemis, in the centre of the square,
is surrounded by the building forming three rectangular wings
Among the legends about the goddess, one remembers that Agamemnon,
to obtain a favour, had to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to the goddess.
Goddess Artemis nonetheless decided to replace the young girl by an animal,
and have her to be her priestess. Young Athenian girls dedicated themselves
to this goddess before they got married.
